Water is a shared common resource for all. At Hindustan Unilever Foundation (HUF), we believe that water must be managed and governed through informed and collective action by citizens and their representatives.
HUF set up the ‘Water for Public Good’ programme to focus on addressing water challenges for India’s rural communities and farmers. Under ‘Water for Public Good’, we partner with non-profit organisations for collective action on water conservation, governance, and judicious water use. Across diverse river basins and hydrogeological zones, three core pillars define our work with rural communities:
Build water numeracy to help quantify availability, budget, and allocate water use
Promote scientific citizen-led water conservation and governance efforts
Drive behaviour change for responsible water use in agriculture
HUF programmes deliver impact on environmental, economic, and social metrics. Impact is rigorously measured and independently assured every year.
It takes collective effort and will to help India’s rural communities overcome their water challenges. Partnerships are critical to our programmes as we work with state governments, funders, industry bodies, academia, and civil society organisations.
